August 2006

I think wearing red shoes to one’s wedding will bring the bride good luck. Don’t you think? My delightful and fashion-forward friend Rosemary wore red shoes to her wedding and as a nod to her and her 10 year-strong marriage, I’m going to do the same.

And I’ve always loved red shoes. There is a story about me that circulates every now and then in my family about my love of red shoes.  When I was five years old I desperately wanted a pair of red mary janes. I wanted them so badly that I asked my mother if I could have them. But before she could answer, I said, “I know…. only when they go on sale…” And sure enough when they did, my mother got them for me. And so began my love affair with red shoes.

This pair is velvet. I’m wearing them with my first pair of hand-knit stockings I ever made. To help er… stretch out the shoes. I think its working. Afterall, no one wants to be bothered by tight shoes on their wedding.

Please note that as my wedding gets closer and closer there may be a few more wedding posts, so please bear with me–and I promise not to turn into a Bridezilla!

Exit Slouchy and enter Honey.

Yes, my friends, it is time to knit up this year-old yarn into what it is was meant to be–Remebering Honey, a delicious little sweater with pretty lace and a flattering v-neck style from Interweave Knits Spring 2003.  I’m so excited! The delightful Ms. Mingled Yarn,-Elizabeth, knit it awhile ago and I’ve wanted to do it since I saw hers. And this will make a nice dent into my stash indeed!

I’m taking this week off from knitting to give my elbows a bit of a rest. But I’m taking this up to Point Reyes for Labor Day weekend. I’m so excited about this break! Sweetie and I have been planning it for ages and even though we are only getting away for three days, we plan to make the most of it and just relax ourselves silly. And eat lots of Oysters.

If I wasn’t on such a severe “yarn-diet/save-money-for-the-wedding” plan I would purchase some spinning stuff. I’ve seen people do it with a flat spindle to give my little arm a break. It needs it! That and the addition of some yoga. Bikram yoga always nips my RSS pain in the bud. So after Labor Day, I’m going to start incorporating that into my working out.

Oh and please go see Little Miss Sunshine if you can. It’s the best! I plan on seeing it again and I even bought the soundtrack. So amazing!

Well, Slouch, I’ve taken you as far as I’m willing to go without a pattern, so I’m popping you in a ziplock and setting you out for a bit. But no worries, I’ll be back to you soon.

But I needed a little break from knitting. From everything actually.

And thanks for the comments. I’m really taking them to heart. Sussing out the job situation will certainly help. I have a great boss and that’s one good starting point.  And I’m trying to take care of myself–in fact last Friday, I decided I needed a massage and it felt GREAT! So great that I’m going to start incorporating them every other week into my life. And I treated myself with kid gloves this weekend–even going to a movie–Little Miss Sunshine. I bawled right through it. It was wonderful.  What woman doesn’t see a little slice of their childhood in Olive? Everything from the glasses to the awkward thoughts of not feeling pretty. OK. Getting sniffly just thinking about it. Excuse me while I download the soundtrack right now and go find a box of Kleenex.

Sorry about the lack of posts, but the job has been a stress-bin. Were talking keep-me-up-at-night-crying-jag-nervous-breakdown-want-to-quit-my-job-STRESS. One of my best friends had took over my job for a couple of months when I was recouping from fibroid surgery earlier this year and she told me she’d never been so unhappy and stressed out as she was during my job.

And the worst part is that I can’t knit right no to relieve some of the stress. It’s just too painful to go at it for a few hours. And that just makes everything worse.

Trying to take some yoga and have been working out, but I wouldn’t say that is a stress release for me, but every little bit helps, yes?

Just looking forward to September 1st when my sweetie and I get out of town for a much needed break.

OK-enough whining. Back to work.

Oh Slouchy, hath thou forsaken me?

We had so much fun at the beginning, but something is rather askew with your sides. Perhaps I should have waited for the real directions. You seem clearly too big for your side. Perhaps I should add some more decreases.

I fear little slouchy right side, you are going to be spending some quality time sorting out your thoughts in the frogging pond.

I guess I could wait for the real instructions, but I think I’m one of the few knitters out there who doesn’t like to work on multiple projects at once. I mean really GO at a project. And I guess I do have a few little side ones like my sweeties socks, but those are really more about car travel than anything else. And then there is the navy “skirt” I’ve been knitting every since last year’s Viva Las Vegas. But that doesn’t really count.

But perhaps it is best that I take a wee break from knitting.  My elbow has been acting up. Which isn’t fun. Anyone know any good ways to get rid of RSS? Other than stopping what they love? Meh!

Hmm…. We’ll see.

I know I’m on this extreme yarn diet, but man–who could say no to Lorna’s Lace & her yummy yarns.

I mean, COME ON–check that out!

Hey, even the Yarn Harlot doesn’t consider sock yarn a breach in the yarn diet. I think of sock yarn as the non-fat frozen yogurt–the “Skinny Cow” if you would–of yarn diets.

And I had to get the new Vogue Knitting?  Because I just had to.  It’s just too tempting. Even though I didn’t see anything that I would make at first glance, I’m sure there is something in there for me to ooh and ahh over.

I hope all of you had a lovely weekend full of exciting and rejuvenating activities. This weekend I rejuvenated myself with some hard core cleaning and sorting. My sweetie and I finally tackled the final frontier–the backroom in our house. Lovingly called the “crawfice—part office part craft room–it was in shambles since we moved in. Nothing even remotely organized about it. And filled with boxes and papers that I’ve been meaning to sort. After 8 hours we have three trash bags full of junk to toss. I’m so happy I could spit.

I’ll have to post pictures.

Another highlight of the weekend was having a chance to sit and knit with the delightful punk rock Purl. Purl’s darling 1930s cottage is simply the most darling space ever. Joyously colored walls, beautiful antiques and a sense of brightness that I’m simply jealous of. I guess that is to be expected when you are an interior design student.  And I made some progress on the slouchy cardigan to boot.

I’ll have to post pictures.

Sunday, Sweetie and I did a little more shopping. Oh yes. I found the absolute perfect 1940s house dress. I love it. And a very snappy little summer dress that Eric thinks is terribly flattering. And the ultimate in Pendleton 1940s jackets. SO. DARN. CUTE!

I’ll have to post pictures.

So, no pictures now, but promises of pictures. Beautiful colorful delicious pictures.

Soon!

I finished the back of the slouchy cardigan and I really like the pink edging. I do have a slight fear that it will just roll into oblivion, but hey, I still like it!

Forgive the crappy pictures, but you know, sometimes that’s the best you can do. This is a really easy knit so far. Very comforting and the yarn smells so good. I can’t explain it. Thank you Grumperina for the lovely button.

Now, if I could just get this stupid post to stop being centered in the middle of the page….

This weekend, Sweetie and I went to the Alameda Flea Market. Such fun! We were determined to get through all the entire thing, but could only keep it together for three and a half hours. I did a lot of looking and my favorite items was this sassy dress. Pretty cute, huh?

After we were returning to our little street, we saw a sign for a yard sale on our street–vintage clothing! So we walked on down and were amazed by our cool neighbors. I got better goodies there for less than $5.00 for everything. Check this out:

This cool vintage lavendar bowling shirt. I LOVE IT! (Not the best picture of me, but still, I love the shirt…)

And check this out! A VINTAGE BAKELITE YARN HOLDER! IN PINK!!!  She was using it for something else and I guess didn’t know what she had. Well, I know and I LOVE! And also check out the darling vintage pink elephant salt and pepper shakers. I’m in love!

It’s such a pity that such a cool couple–walking distance from our house is moving.  That was the real bummer of it all.

Last week I started going to work via a carpool. And let me tell you, it’s fabulous. Even better than the big fancy-pants bus that I would normally take.

And the best part is I can knit in the back of the car. It’s perfect for sock knitting. So, now instead of just dreaming away out the window, I’m getting an extra hour of sock knitting in.

Here is what I have so far on a very special sock:

Why is this sock so special, you ask? Well, because it’s a sock for my Sweetie. He’s been so patient and wonderfully supportive of all of my knitting escapades over the years. And he has been very understanding about the boyfriend curse, which has already knocked out three past boyfriends. Oof! But now that we are less than four months away from our wedding, I don’t think he’ll break up with me (crossing fingers…)  And I chose red because it reminded me of the fact that he had a pair of fluffly red socks he used to wear as a child. And that they will match my wedding shoes.  I will give them to him on our wedding day to wear down the aisle.  I think that is kinda fitting, don’t you?
