September 2006

Yup kids! It’s that time of year–the Devil-Ettes perform. We just had our photo shoot for 2007 publicity. And it’s a hoot! As some of you may know, the Devil-Ettes is a strictly PG dance troupe dedicated to bringing back vintage 60s dance moves like the frug, the swin, and the watusi. It’s such fun! For more info, check out www.devilettes.com. And for all of you ladies in the U.K. the Devil-Ettes are the inspiration for the Action-Ettes.

Unfortunately, I took this year off from the group, so I won’t be dancing–instead I’ll be shilling our merch at the show this Saturday night. Too much with the surgery and wedding planning this year to twist away the nights in white go-go boots. But here are the deets for all of you Bay Area folks:

Sorry for the wedding bonanza. I assure you this will not go on. Afterall it’s closing in on me at a pretty fast clip.

But this is knitting related. But not my knitting. As you know, I love knitting and wanted to incorporate it into my wedding in some manner. So I decided to knit my bridesmaids shawls as their present. In January I started on the first shawl and it killed me. I find knitting Rowan’s Kid Silk Haze to be the equivilant of knitting with fuzzy dental floss. Dental floss that tangles if I look at it wrong.

Fortunately, the Domiknitrix comes to the rescue with a wonderful suggestion–have the world’s fastest knitter, Miriam Tegels help with the knitting. The yarn was sent off and less than two months later not one–or two–but FOUR exquisite shawls came back to me in the most beautiful pattern I’ve ever seen.

Here’s a picture of me pretending I’m a bridesmaid using a dying orchid as my bouquet.

And here’s a better angle of the pattnern–stunning isn’t it? I think it even looks kinda art deco. Spectacular.

I cannot thank Miriam enough. Her work is so beautiful, it makes me cry.

Well. As of today, I’m officially 2 months away from my wedding. And I’m trying not to panic. Even though my sweetie and I have pretty much everything done, there are a few little bits that need to be taken care of.

But the one thing I have finished was the inviations. And trust me, this was an undertaking.

Here we are at my wonderful graphic designer’s house surrounded by a pile of invitation pieces.

Letterpress is awesome, but crazy expensive. So let’s do something wacky–like incorporate sewing into our invites.

That little image came from a 1938 Arthur Murray “How To Dance” book. So we used it as the inspiration for the whole wedding. Lots of dance references throughout. Should be cute!

And how about an additional bit of cuteness by binding it by wrapping red thread around them.

And then to TOTALLY gild the lilly, we are sewing them shut in glassine envelopes.

Here’s my little sassy Singer sewing machine silently cursing me out for making it ingest glassine. Oof!

The final product just went out in the mail today. These pictures don’t do it justice. So far the feedback has been amazing. People calling and saying such nice things. It certainly makes it feel like I’m getting married.

Martha Stewart, eat your heart out!

This sweater is so yummy to knit. Perhaps it’s the yarn or the lace patterns after knitting so much stockinette in my aborted first attempt on the slouchy cardigan. Since I’m such a “process” knitter–and quite honestly, I think all knitters are into the process, because it is clearly easier to buy a sweater/scarf/pair of socks than to knit one today–I really appreciate knitting with lovely soft yarn. In my early years of knitting, I would knit with anything–fueled solely by my love of knitting. But now the tactile part and color is gaining importance.

Anyway, here is what I’ve knit so far. I’m enjoying the lace part. I think it slows me down and is easier on my arms.

Sorry about the dodgy pictures. I’ll post better ones later. I’ve actually made a bit more progress and hope to have the front with it’s fancy laces finished.

My goal is to knock this out by the end of September, so I can start on socks for Socktober. I still need to finish Eric’s socks for the weddng. Which is officially less than two months away.

Boy, this past week was busy busy busy! In fact, I was so booked that I never even had a chance to turn on my computer on at home, let alone spend some quality time with my blog.

But let’s go back in time to that lovely Labor Day Weekend when I went away and did nothing but watch old Gary Grant movies and the first season of Arrested Developement. And, of course, knit.

Here was my first bit of knitting on the lovely “Remembering Honey” sweater that weekend. Very wonky–that purse lace stitch. I had to go down to a size 2 needle instead of 5 to get the gauge. Crazy! I’ll post more pictures of this sweater later this week.

And I usually don’t buy stuff on vacations, but I needed a tape measure and I bought this darling one.

We loved the little cottage we booked. So sweet and clean. Here is a picture of Minnow looking out the window of our bedroom. So shabby chic!

And speaking of Minnow, here’s where she spent the majority of the weekend.

Well, that knitting siren Kim Hargreaves is at it again! This morning I recieved a mass email from Ms. Hargreaves regarding her new fall/winter line called “Light and Shadow” And boy, were there some cute knitted goodness on that site. My favorite is Tender:

Pretty, isn’t it. I love the little detail. And it’s made of kidsilk haze, which can be a somewhat irksome thing to knit with. I mean, it’s OK, but eh. I actually have a bundle of it in a gorgeous raspberry that I’ve been holding on to for this sweater–the airy cardigan from Interweave Knits:

Pretty similar in style, eh? Hmmm… Makes me think–which would I prefer and wear more? Because I’m REALLY into actually oh–wearing my sweaters instead of having them sit in the closet or be too big.

Actually, the last two items I knit from Kim Hargreaves were too big–even though I made a gauge swatch. Most frustrating, so it makes me want to instead stay with the airy cardigan. Especially since I already have the yarn for that.

But listen to me talking about other sweater projects when I have so much stash to knit through and other projects ahead of me. Speaking of projects, I would have posted pictures of how much I’ve done on “Remembering Honey” but I can’t find my digital camera. So please forgive the wait.

Well, I hope everyone had a nice relaxing Labor Day weekend. I did!

Sweetie and I went up to Tomales Bay where we did nothing but relax. It was amazing! I’ll post pictures tomorrow.

But one of the most delighful weekend finds was falling in love with that new knitting book that I think everyone else in the world already loves–Mason Dixon Knitting (I swear–I’ll learn how to do an imbedded link very soon, so when you see Mason Dixon Knitting, it will be highlighted with a link to Amazon. One day!). But here is a picture of the book. Not that everyone in the knitting world doesn’t know this gem by heart!

Well, I have had many chances to buy the book before but never purchased it. A quick flip through in May and I was uninspired and walked away. Well, what a difference just a couple of months makes because I opened the book Friday afternoon and by that night I was ready to pledge my allegiance to Mason Dixon. So many of my own thoughts were right there–even a side bar on housecoats made me nearly shed a tear.

(NOTE: I’m obsessed with housecoats at the moment. What is a housecoat you might ask? It’s a lovely slightly fitted dress/coat/robe thingie that buttons up or zips up and looks far more charming than a bath robe and I plan on making one–hopefully even this weekend. Gasp!)  In fact Lulu did a thing on them last week at my insistence.  http://www.lulusvintage.com/2006/08/vintage_dressin.html

Anyway, I want to make half of the designs in the book: the washcloths, the moderne log cabin quilt, and the little baby sweater that looks like it could be knit up in a day. I’m SO making that one.

And when I finished the book, I wanted it to go on and on. I was actually blue when it ended and then just said, well, I’ll start reading it again from the beginning.

So, expect some Mason Dixon knitting in the future on this blog. Hoorah!

More posts later this week including an update on Remembering Honey
