October 2006

Well, here I am wearing more makeup than I would on any other Halloween. Wedding make up trial. I’m not used to wearing that much make up. Ever. But you have to put more on than normal so it shows up in pictures. But, er. I like the blurry one of my here with Minnow best of all, so clearly, I need her to pull back on the make up.

Well, blame it on Lolly’s Socktoberfest, or misocrafty’s lovely pictures of her socks, but I just went hog wild in yarn stores this month and take a look at my haul. Oof!

Aren’t the colors fun on this one? They scream “Back to School”!

I’m knitting these for Eric–some big tall boot socks.

And I’m most excited about knitting this yarn. I’ve been craving pink and brown socks every since I saw the lovely ones that Hedgeblog made up awhile ago. So yummy, eh? This is my latest Etsy purchase from Girl on the Rocks–and she’s a Bay Area knitters. Hoorah!

Don’t get me wrong–I simply adore all of that crazy stripey goodness from the German and Italian yarn manufacturers and I love Lorna’s lace of course, but as I noted before I like to celebrate indpendent crafters who are rocking it out and creating such beautiful  wool for the world. So, here’s to buying more from Etsy in the future!

Oh, and do you like that fabric I put the socks on? It’s what we are making Eric’s tie out of for the wedding.

Sorry, but please expect a bit of wedding drivel to sneak into my posts for awhile.

I’m the luckiest girl around.

Last weekend, these two wonderful women surprised me with a little LA adventure where we drank hundreds of dollars worth of champagne that left me passed out on the bathroom floor. The weekend involved a stretch limo, easedropping on Ryan Seacrest’s agent, night-time laps in the pool, a puffy eye thanks to Pringles, an offer to work for Coldplay, the most vile martini in the world, pinkberry yogurt, a much picked through Playgirl magazine, and of course tons and tons of laughter.

I could be in a turkish prison and still have fun with these two spectacular, smart, beautiful women. Fortunately we were at the Grafton Hotel instead a prison for my mini-bachelorette party. But more importantly, these two women inspire me every day with their graciousness, passion for life and big hearts.

Ladies, you rule!  I love you more than you know!

And get this! The insanity continues this weekend. Watch for posts on that too!

Just terribly busy!

I have many pictures to post.

I finished a pair of socks and two different socks!

I kinda went on a sock yarn buying binge. Many pretty yarns to post.

Also, went to a wonderful wedding. I’ll post pictures of that too!

But I must admit with a month left to the wedding, and work gearing up in an insane way, I fear I may not be able to post much over the next month. At this point, I’m completely booked until December. DECEMBER! How does this happen?

Oof!

But I promise thoroughly glamorous posts soon!

Well! It was the battle of the sock yarns yesterday! I was having a tough time deciding between these two lovely yarns and I just couldn’t decide, so I knit a bit of each:

Still couldn’t make up my mind, so I went to the next step–trying them on:

Well I decided to go with Lorna’s Lace eggplanty pink goodness on the right. Why? Because I’m knitting Pepperknit’s lovely Anastasia sock pattern which has a small lace yarn over detail that is mindless enough to do while watching “Lost” and my skin is shown a bit more against the darker colors. And Flibbertgibbet suggest I go with this yarn.

But I did want to try knitting a bit with the pink/brown/green goodness that I bought off of Etsy. I hate to admit it, but that yarn was the first thing I have bought off of Etsy and it certainly won’t be the last! I love it! I am a BIG believer in supporting women trying to make a go at their own business that involves their own passion–particularly around some sort of craft. It is these women that inspire me every day to keep dreaming and believe in the things that I love to do can be a way to make a living.

Oh, and the quality is amazing to boot! This yarn is soft and the color combinations are just gorgeous–much prettier than anything I can find in a yarn shop.

I think I might have to go

Well, our girl Lolly has posed some questions to the sock knitting universe. And I shall happily answer them!

QUESTION #1:  When did you start making socks? Did you teach yourself or were you taught by a friend or relative? or in a class? What was your first pair?  How have they “held up” over time?

I made my first pair of socks at Old Sturbridge Village when I worked there, taught by Debbie Knight, uber-knitter extraordinaire. I made them on size 000 DPN needles with handspun natural yarn from the sheep in the local flock at the village. And I still have them. In fact, I posted a picture of them on this site. Not so much about the socks, but you get the drift.  They are now 13 years old and still going strong.

QUESTION #2: What would you have done differently?

Not made my first socks on 000 DPNs–that is somewhat masochistic of me.

QUESTION #3: What yarns have you particularly enjoyed?

Oh, that’s easy–I love Lorna’s Laces sock yarn. It’s the best. It feels so good to knit with and the colors are quite charming.

QUESTION #4: Do you like to crochet your socks? or knit them on DPNs, 2 circulars, or using the Magic Loop method?

I would have stopped knitting socks completely if it wasn’t for the magic loop technique. And that there are so many cool space dyed yarns out there now in gorgeous colors, that it is almost impossible to not knit socks.

QUESTION # 5: Which kind of heel do you prefer?  (flap? or short-row?)

Oh I like either, but when I changed over to the magic loop technique, I became quite enamored with the turkish heel or short row way.

QUESTION #6: How many pairs have you made?

I’m sure dozens, but since I started up again this year, I’ve knit three pairs. One pair for me, one pair for my mom and one pair for my sweetie. And I will probably knit up three more pairs before the end of the year.

There! My first “meme”.  So indulgent!

Something about October–it just sort of revs up life in general. Work becomes more demanding, the wedding creeps closer and the weather starts to take a snarky edge. With all of these mindsucks I begin to rely on my knitting to soothe my tousled mind.

The cleverness needed to knit the lace edging on Remembering Honey is being sapped right out of me since it is needed elsewhere.

What is a knitter to do?

Knit something simple and comforting. Knit a scarf.

Last Saturday, after a run-in with some bad using the Short Row scarf pattern given to me by our favorite Punk Rock Pearl.

Scarf knitting gives you so much for so little. Something so simple can keep you warm and happy and the bleakest of days.

It is a mental massage–the equivilent to drinking a cup of hot chocolate. I love it.

And no worries–I will get back to sock knitting as soon as I decide what yarn to use…

Yes, yes! I am one of the 1500 knitters participating in Lolly’s Socktoberfest! Hoorah! And to celebrate it, I finished Eric’s socks.

Ignore that wonky white bit right there on the heel–it is not a hole but a piece of white dust. Here is a picture of the sock in action. Can’t you just see that little hint of red peaking out from his black suit at the wedding? He loves them.

And eventhough I have TWO sweaters on the needles right now (our beloved Remembering Honey and Knit Cafe’s Slouchy cardigan) I’m starting a new pair of socks. But I’m in a quandry–which yarn should I use?

These gorgeous gems OR this stunning stuff I just got in the mail from Yarn gypsy’s  pink and brown yumminess

Or this delicious yarn I bought a month ago–look familiar?

Any votes for which one to choose? I’m open for suggestions! I’m contemplating the infamous jaywalker sock pattern (toe up, of course) that everyone and their mother has made at least three times. I just want something simple that I can knit and not think as I watch hours and hours of TV for work.

Yes! I watch TV as part of my job! Hoorah TV.com!
